History - The Beginning

From discussions and an idea shared between Brian Comport and Peter Neilson whilst travelling to work in Melbourne by train, Train World commenced business at 615 Hawthorn Road East Brighton in 1973.

From a cabinet in a haberdashery store, Train World grew to take over half the shop in 1974, then the entire store and by 1977 Train World had not only taken over the store but the rear residence as well.  In 1981 the shop moved across the road to 624 Hawthorn Road East Brighton on the corner of Hawthorn Road and Northern Ave.  Here too the shop continued to grow from just the front store, then the rear store area, then to the rear storage area, then to the rear garage, the rear warehouse and finally taken over the entire building.By 2005 Train World was bursting at the seams and in need of more space. After 31 years in the same building the decision was made to move.

The Present

On the 1st July 2012 Train World moved to 290 Bay Street Brighton. To bigger, brighter and better premises right next to the Sandringham Railway line and less then 100 meters from the North Brighton Railway Station. The store is 30% larger and set out differently to the old store with three distinct sections.  Front entrance and section one is the glass show cases with locomotives and specialty items on display, section 2 is the main body of the shop with rolling stock, track, parts, detail parts, structures, buildings, Thomas, Chuggington, paints, magazines, DVDS, CDs, DCC, couplers, bogies, kits, scratch building materials, cars, buses and section 3 is the final section with scenic materials, books, magazines and in the future modeling clinics.

Since the 1980s the focus of Train World has been trains and model trains, nothing but trains and everything to do with trains.  Making Train World the largest pure train store in Australia and Australia's premier train shop.  At 290 Bay Street Train World will continue to improve, expand and grow providing a real train shopping experience for those that visit the store.
