This book is intended for general readership and for walkers, cyclists and other users of the Rail Trail.  The Rail Trail follows the course of the branch railway from Ballarat through the former gold towns west of Ballarat and the surrounding pastoral area.  The book draws on the book "Cross Country" by the same author and Jack McLean published in 1986 by Australian Railway Historical Society in which detailed information about the railway aspects of the line were given.

The soft-cover book of 52 pages features information about each locality along the trail as well as  black/white, monochrome and colour images showing aspects of then and now.
