These 1,700hp Types 3 diesel-electric locomotives were built at English Electric’s Vulcan Foundry and by Robert Stephenson & Hawthorns between 1960 and 1965, with 309 examples produced in total. When TOPS was implemented the type was designated Class 37.

The class proved popular with railwaymen and so in 1985, a major refurbishment programme for the Class 37 locomotives was sanctioned to extend the working lives of 135 locomotives.

Features of the refurbishment involved plating over the four-character head codes and sealing off the nose end communication doors. Dedicated freight locomotives received lower gearing to increase the tractive effort, and some were fitted with extra ballast or even more powerful engines.

Features of the refurbishment involved plating over the four-character head codes and sealing off the nose end communication doors. Dedicated freight locomotives received lower gearing to increase the tractive effort, and some were fitted with extra ballast or even more powerful engines. A new subclass was created for locomotives refurbished with Electric Train Heating (ETH) equipment, allowing their use on passenger trains the whole year-round.

With the sectorisation of British Rail taking hold in the early-1980s, the locomotives returned to traffic following refurbishment in a wide and diverse range of liveries. Passenger machines appeared in BR Blue Large Logo, InterCity and Regional Railways schemes to name just three, whilst freight engines received numerous varieties of Railfreight livery, Transrail, Mainline and Loadhaul. The Class continued to be widely used into the Privatisation-era, with examples operating for the likes of EWS, DRS, West Coast Railways and Colas, whilst others have received ‘retro’ heritage repaints.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2800/8220/files/bbl-35304sfx-bachmann-branchline-class-37-0-split-headcode-37043-loch-lomond-br-blue-large-logo-oo-scale-dcc-sound-working-fans-locomotive-848.jpg?v=1756203274
bbl-35336sfx-bachmann-branchline-class-class-37-4-refurbished-37401-mary-queen-of-scots-br-ic-mainline-oo-scale-dcc-sound-working-fans
BBL-35336SFX Bachmann Branchline Class Class 37/4 Refurbished 37401 'Mary Queen of Scots' BR IC (Mainline) OO-Scale DCC Sound working fans.

BBL-35336SFX
35-336SFX
Bachmann Branchline
OO-Scale
Class-37/4 Diesel-Electric
#37401 'Mary Queen of Scots' BR IC (Mainline)
DCC/Sound Fitted Deluxe with working fans.

As part of our Autumn 2022 British Railway Announcements, we are delighted to present the stunning all-new Bachmann Branchline Class 37/4 as Refurbished loco No. 37401 ‘Mary Queen of Scots’ in BR InterCity Mainline livery in the superb SOUND FITTED DELUXE format.

The British Rail Class 37 is a favourite among enthusiasts and modellers alike, and this iconic loco returns to the Bachmann Branchline range for 2022, but not as you know it. Following in the footsteps of the award-winning Bachmann Branchline Class 47, our all-new OO scale Class 37 has been designed from the rails up to ensure this classic locomotive is modelled more accurately than ever before, whilst the technical specification is equally impressive and incorporates the same great features as our Class 47.

The Class continued to be widely used into the Privatisation-era, with examples operating for the likes of EWS, DRS, West Coast Railways and Colas, whilst others have received ‘retro’ heritage single-car double-ended diesel multiple unit. 16 driving motor vehicles were built from 1960, numbered 55020–55035. These were supplemented by ten single-ended trailer vehicles, numbered 56280–56289 (later renumbered 54280–54289). They have a top speed of 70 mph, with slam-doors, and vacuum brakes. The driving motor vehicles were nicknamed "Bubble Cars" by some enthusiasts (a nickname endorsed and made official by final passenger service operator Chiltern Railways).

The Class 121 vehicles were introduced in 1960 for use on the Western Region of British Rail. They were used on various lightly used branch lines in Cornwall including the Looe branch, the branch lines off the main line in the Thames Valley including the Greenford Branch Line, the Bridport branch line (closed 1975), and the Severn Beach line in Bristol. In 1978 all of the units were still allocated to Western Region depots. The Class 121 is Britain's longest serving DMU, operating in passenger service for 57 years until 2017.

977723 started out life as 55021 under BR. In 1994 the unit was photographed wearing the Network South East livery with its departmental number of 977723 where it served as a route learning unit as well as a sandite application vehicle. The locomotive would wear the Railtrack livery This Railroad model features a simplified running mechanism including a three pole motor and more of a direct drive to the motor, as such it is an ideal starter model. These 70 horsepower machines were originally built for use at Royal Naval Armament Depots (RNAD) which employed narrow gauge networks to move armaments between storage locations and transhipment sites. The perfect complement to the Bachmann Narrow Gauge RNAD Wagons, these diesel locomotives pack a lot into a small space with a high proportion of diecast parts to provide the 4-wheel locomotives with a running performance befitting the prototype. Several details are fitted separately, including the air filter mounted on top of the bonnet, headlights (non-functional) at the front and rear of the cab, windscreen wipers, the exhaust conditioner and, inside the cab, chairs and controls are modelled too.

The coreless motor, which is fitted with a flywheel, provides drive to both axles – each of which run in separate metal bearings. Electrical pick-up comes from all wheels whilst the couplings are mounted into NEM coupling pockets – these can be removed and the bufferbeams swapped out for fully detailed alternatives that do not feature the cut-outs required for the OO9 coupling.

All of this detail is brought to life by the livery application which uses authentic colours, logos and typefaces to capture every element of the prototype; from the maker’s name on the front of the locomotive to the fuel gauge on the bonnet side. Window frames are picked out in black and the cab interior is decorated, but the icing on the cake for this model is the ‘wasp stripes’ at either which really bring it to life.

MODEL FEATURES:

Bachmann Narrow Gauge OO9 Scale

Era 7

Locomotive is now Preserved

Pristine RNAD Dean Hill Yellow livery

Running No. DH888

Accessory Pack

NEM Coupling Pockets

Powerful Coreless Motor and Flywheel

Detailed and Decorated Cab Interior

Equipped with a Next18 DCC Decoder Socket –

Length 59mm (over couplings)

BAGULEY-DREWRY 70HP DIESEL HISTORY

The seventy horsepower, 4 wheel diesel-hydraulic locomotives were built by Baguley-Drewry in Burton Upon Trent at the start of the 1980s and were some of the final locomotives to be outshopped by the company which closed its doors in 1984. A total of 512 Class 47s were built at Crewe Works and Brush's Falcon Works, Loughborough between 1962 and 1968, which made them the most numerous Class of British mainline diesel locomotive. They were classified as Type 4s.They were fitted with the Sulzer 12LDA28C twin-bank twelve-cylinder unit producing 2,750 bhp (2,050 kW) - though this was later derated to 2,580 bhp (1,920 kW) to improve reliability - and have been used on both passenger and freight trains on Britain's railways for over 50 years. Despite the introduction of more modern types of traction, a significant number are still in use, both on the mainline and on heritage railways. As of October 2016, 81 locomotives still exist as Class 47s, with further examples having been converted to other classes; 30 retain "operational status" on the mainline.By 1986, only five of the original 512 locomotives had been withdrawn from service, all because of serious accident damage. However, with work for the Class declining due to the introduction of new rolling stock and spare parts becoming difficult to source, some inroads started being made. The first locomotives to be targeted were the non-standard pilot batch of 20, now numbered 47 401-47 420. Three locomotives were withdrawn as life-expired in February 1986 and the remainder of the batch that had not recently been overhauled followed in the next two years. All 20 were withdrawn by 1992.Meanwhile, BR drew up a 'hit-list' of locomotives for early withdrawal, mainly including those with non-standard electrical equipment, known as series parallel locomotives. In the outset, withdrawals were slow, mainly due to the surplus of spare parts and new flows of freight traffic which required extra locomotives; only 61 locomotives had been withdrawn by the end of 1992. However, with the introduction of new locomotives, the rate of withdrawal quickly rose, with 86 more 47s reaching the end of their lives in the next three years. With most of the non-standard locomotives withdrawn, the reduction of the fleet again proceeded more slowly. The privatisation of British Rail also produced new independent rail companies needing available traction until they could order new locomotives. From 1996 to 2006, an average of around fifteen locomotives per year were taken out of service.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2800/8220/files/hmr-r30187-hornby-railroad-plus-nse-class-47-47598-era-8-oo-scale-dcc-ready-locomotive-398.jpg?v=1754948625
bbl-394101-bachmann-narrow-gauge-fr-tin-car-saloon-third-no-119-ffestiniog-railway-maroon-era-8-oo9-scale
BBL-394101 Bachmann Narrow-Gauge FR 'Tin Car' Saloon Third No. 119 'Ffestiniog Railway' Maroon (Era-8) OO9-Scale

BBL-394101
394-101
Bachmann Narrow-Gauge
OO9-Scale
FR 'Tin Car' Saloon Third
No. 119 'Ffestiniog Railway'
Maroon
(Era-8)

Features:

Bachmann Narrow Gauge OO9 Scale

Era 8

Vehicle is Preserved

Pristine Ffestiniog Railway Maroon livery

Running No. 119

Profiled Metal Wheels

NEM Coupling Pockets

Detailed and Decorated Interior including Toilet Compartment

Length 146mm (over couplings)

The Ffestiniog Railway ‘Tin Car’ Coaches from Bachmann Narrow Gauge are the perfect choice for anyone wishing to model this famous Welsh narrow gauge railway in OO9 Scale.
