It describes a momentous period in the railway's 150 years of operation which witnessed the end of the steam train era, the slashing of the organization's size, and the attempt to build a modern commercial organization while working with technology up to 80 years old. It tells the story through the eyes of Tom Yates who started as a 16 year old Lad Porter and ending up as the Station Master of the busiest Victorian Station - Flinders Street Station.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2800/8220/files/what-a-journey-life-in-the-victorian-railways-1948-1987-aavi-bk5-reference-883.jpg?v=1769481674
ascr-gdee-gerald-dee-the-life-times-of-a-remarkable-railwayman
Gerald Dee: The Life & Times of a Remarkable Railwayman (ASCR-GDEE)

Product No.: ASCR-GDEE
Title: Gerald Dee: The Life & Times of a Remarkable Railwayman
Author(s): Fowler, John
Illustrator(s): N/A
Publisher: Eveleigh Press
ISBN: 9781876568825
Condition: New
Binding: Hard Cover
Dust Jacket: None
Edition: 1st Edition
Publication Year: 2015

Features: 160 Pages with Black/White & Colour Photos.

Captivated by the steam locomotive from infancy, Gerald joined the Victorian Railways in 1951 as a lad labourer, beginning a life-long railway career which transitioned from the steam era into modernisation. Attaining middle management, Gerald was widely acclaimed for his unique management style of recognising the wellbeing of the men as a priority. Within the thirteen chapters and appendix, Gerald's rich railway life experience is presented as a steam locomotive fireman, North Melbourne Loco, progression to driver, enginemen's instructor, middle management in the office of Locomotive Running and Fuel Conservation.

Written by John Fowler, who at one time fired with 'Ger', the book is presented in the style of first person narrative, interwoven with events of the time, allowing the reader to experience a vivid picture of Gerald's love of the railway, his footplate experiences and a career path toward management. The latter is no easy road for Gerald and offers surprises as he becomes caught up in the twists and turns of a railway continually attempting to reorganise into a modern management style. Of further interest to the modern day historian and modeller is the way in which Gerald became a major force in fostering the preservation of steam locomotives in Victoria, through his efforts in establishing the ARHS Vic. Division Railway Museum, conversion of Polly to Z526, and the saving of Heavy Harry and X36.

In summary, this is an entertaining account of a railway career path that cannot be repeated today.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2800/8220/files/gerald-dee-the-life-times-of-a-remarkable-railwayman-ascr-gdee-reference-677.jpg?v=1757997789
nh-004-beech-forest-capital-on-the-ridge
Beech Forest: Capital on the Ridge (NH-004)

Product No.: NH-004
Title: Beech Forest: Capital on the Ridge
Author(s): Houghton, Norman
Illustrator(s): N/A
Publisher: Self Published
ISBN: N/A
Condition: New
Binding: Soft Cover
Dust Jacket: None
Edition: Reprint
Publication Year: 2008

Features: 111 Pages with Black/White Photos.

A complete history of the town of Beech Forest and surrounding district. The Ranges were encircled or driven into by the Geelong to Colac railway (1877), the Moriac to Wensleydale railway (1890), the Birregurra to Forrest railway (1891), the Camperdown to Timboon railway (1892) and the Colac to Beech Forest (1902) and Crowes railway (1911).

The railways provided the first all-weather, fast and reliable transport services into a area characterised by dense timber and high rainfall and enabled closer settlement and timber winning to begin on a systematic scale. The Colac to Crowes railway differed from the others in that it was a 2ft 6 in (762 mm) gauge line specifically designed for rugged terrain. Construction of the Beech Forest railway began in 1900 and the 47.7 kms length of rails reached the terminus in March 1902.

Further agitation by settlers along the Ridge and to the west as far as Princetown resulted in the railway being extended from Beech Forest to Crowes. A canvas for the graffiti artist, a morning library for daily commuters, and a performing stage for the busker, the role and design of Melbourne trains have evolved over the decades as technology, art and functionality coalesce to connect a bustling 21st century city. For graffiti writers in particular, trains have a high cultural value since the art’s conception in the 1960s Philadelphia and 1970s New York subways. It is art through motion and logistics conveying sociopolitical or aesthetic messages connecting to the daily masses. Over a number of years, he practiced his craft at graffiti, both in Australia and internationally, allowing his creative skills and ambition to be tailored in the public space. Skateboarding and graffiti allowed him to appreciate spatial geography and art as a backdrop to his creative and design career. Get the Met was Jourdan Sungkar’s final year project for a Bachelor degree in Advertising and Branding at Swinburne University, 2014. The course requested to make a book about an artist or a designer. Jourdan pushed the boundaries to brainstorm a book about the Melbourne train system - one that resonates with his streets upbringing. Six years later, through painstaking research and design, including unseen photographs and archived records, the book was finally published and is now a collector’s item. Jourdan has published and printed this book independently.
